Shrunken WSJ, My Last Take

I was hoping to leave behind the topic of the “size matters” Wall Street Journal, but an article in today’s Los Angeles Times brought the subject up again.  What’s that about bad pennies?

Tim Rutten, media analyst, argues that the WSJ’s new approach–breaking news on the Web, analysis and background stories in the print edition–is the wave of the future for newspapers.

Rutten maintains this is a return to the old media world (pre-Web, pre-TV even) when a.m. newspapers broke the news and p.m. newspapers analyzed it, though when I worked for an afternoon newspaper, the iconic Los Angeles Herald-Examiner, we focused solely on breaking news.  Oh, well.

For the sake of newspapers, however, let’s hope that Rutten and the Journal are onto something.
