Newspapers Get Pinched by Web

First television, then the Web–newspapers are feeling the heat advertising-wise.

As a journalist who started his career in newspapers and is evidently ending it on the Web, I understand the progression, but it’ll be a sad day when just a few newspapers are left to help shape our culture.

Newspapers are trying to strike back, however.  The Tribune, McClathy and Gannett chains–three giants–are banding together to sell joint advertising on their Web sites.  In response, or in anticipation, Yahoo is joining seven other newspaper groups to do the same.

Somehow, I think traditional newspapers are in for a tough fight.  Sad to say, but their day is fading in this era of social networking and blogs–and people who can barely read thanks to our unionized, ruinized public educational system.
