How Does Effect Affect English Learners?

Lots of grown-up native English speakers I’ve encountered have a tough time distinguishing between effect and affect.  This is only natural, I assume, since the words are so close in spelling and blurry in differentiation.  (However, this is not as bad as some of my students, many of whom insist on spelling sense as since.)

If you type a search entry in Google as “difference between affect and effect,” you’ll get a zillion sites to visit.  One I particularly like is Common Errors in English, which not only explains English usage in an alphabetical listing but also gives its accurate answers with a sense of humor. To see what I mean, just go to its affect/effect explanation.
