Curiouser and Curiouser

That’s how the Orange County Register has labeled California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s new definition of “consumer demand.”

Which is?

Now, regardless of how you view the Register‘s political stance, the paper certainly has a point when it comes to how politicians bend language to suit their needs.  In this instance, the Governator issued an edict that gasoline referinerers would be required to reduce carbon content of their passenger vehicle fuels by 10 percent by 2020.  Then he explained it away by saying this mandale “will use market-based mechanisms that allow providers to choose how they reduce emissions while responding to consumer demand.”

I don’t know about you, but I live in California and the only consumer demand here is for larger gas-guzzling vehicles and cheaper gasoline, so obviously the market isn’t forcing refineries to switch their blends.  The governor is.  I guess the governor is the only consumer who counts.
